Teen Arrested After Ramming a Police Car

Maurice Gant (16), of St. Petersburg was arrested yesterday by St. Petersburg Police Officers following a pursuit in which Gant rammed a police car, injuring the officer who was inside.  Gulfport Police charged Gant with attempted murder of a police officer based on his actions, which took place as the pursuit went through the City of Gulfport.

St. Petersburg officers had tried to stop Gant because he was suspected of carjacking, but Gant refused to stop and led the officers through west St. Petersburg and Gulfport.  At one point, Sergeant Joe Collins of the St. Petersburg Police Department ended up in front of Gant, who was driving a stolen 2007, Nissan Maxima.  Collins, whose emergency lights were activated, pulled to the side of the road in the residential neighborhood on 54th Street and 14th Avenue South.  Witnesses said that they saw Gant steer toward the police car and ram into the driver’s side of it before continuing to flee.

Sergeant Collins was transported to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment of injuries, and he is in stable condition.  Gant was apprehended when officers stopped him moments later in the Child’s Park neighborhood of St. Petersburg.
