08/18/2010- Operation Medicine Cabinet comes to Gulfport
Gulfport, FL The fourth round of Operation Medicine Cabinet will be coming to Gulfport on Saturday August 21, 2010. The Gulfport Police Department, working with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will be collecting all unused or expired prescription medications at Walgreens located at 5701 Gulfport Boulevard South from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Operation Medicine Cabinet is a statewide effort which includes 19 drop-off locations throughout Pinellas County. Operation Medicine Cabinet has partnered with Walgreens to give citizens an opportunity to safely discard unused or expired prescription medications. This is a mulit-agency effort aimed at addressing the problem of prescription drug abuse and keeping a clean environment.
The event is an effort to raise awareness about the problem of prescription drug abuse. The problem has reached epidemic proportions. According to statistics prescription drugs are the number one abused drug in the United States, now surpassing all other illicit drugs. The City of Gulfport has experienced numerous deaths in 2010 due to prescription drugs,
Citizens may simply stop by during the designated times and drop off their medications for safe collection and disposal. Please be aware that no bio-hazards or needles will be accepted and that the program is intended for private citizens of Pinellas County and not for commercial use.
