STATE EMPLOYEE ARRESTED AFTER SENDING NUDE PHOTOS TO STUDENT

GULFPORT, FL – Gulfport Chief of Police, G. Curt Willocks and Attorney General Bill McCollum today announced that a St. Petersburg state employee has been arrested on charges he sexually solicited a young Pinellas County teen.

Parris C. Woods, a corporal employed by the Department of Juvenile Justice, was arrested following an investigation initiated by the School Resource Officer at Boca Ciega High School. The arrest was carried out by the Gulfport Police Department and the Attorney General’s CyberCrime Unit.

School Resource Officer Steven Beltran – who had just been certified in CyberSafety by the CyberCrime Unit – began investigating Woods after a 14-year old female student reported she had received text messages from a man who claimed to be employed at a local juvenile detention center where she had recently been taken for an unrelated matter. The girl reported the text messages from the suspect – whom she had never met – included attached photos apparently depicting the sender in nude and obscene poses, as well as a request to meet the girl in person to engage in sexual activity.

The Gulfport Police Department contacted the CyberCrime Unit, which immediately began assisting with the investigation. Woods, 27, was arrested when law enforcement officers arrived at a designated meeting place and found him waiting to meet the child. He was then identified as a corporal assigned to the Pinellas County Juvenile Detention Center. The investigation will continue to determine if Woods has any additional victims.
